Biography
Major General Lindsay was born in 1936 in Monroe, Wisconsin. He received his commission through the ROTC program at the University of Wisconsin –Madison in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
He began his career as the base munitions officer of the US Air Forces Europe Weapons Center, Wheelus Air Base, Libya. One year later he transferred and became a staff officer for conventional munitions requirements and logistics at Lindsey Air Station, West Germany. In 1963 he enrolled at the Air Force Institute of Technology and received a degree in heat transfer and thermodynamics. Upon graduating, he was assigned as a development project officer for large solid rockets to the Propulsion Directorate, Titan III System Program Office, Space Programs Division at Los Angeles Air Force Station, California.
Four years later the general transferred to the Development Division, Air Force Armament Laboratory in Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, and became the chief of the Guns and Rockets branch. In 1971 he graduated from Armed Forces Staff College and was assigned to Headquarters Air Force Systems Command at Andrews Air Force Base, MD, as an inspector in the Office of the Inspector General. He then went on to complete Defense Systems Management School in 1973 as a distinguished graduate.
For the next five years General Lindsay served as assistant deputy for policy, chief of the Launch Vehicle Integration Division, and deputy director of launch systems integration, Office of Special projects, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force at Los Angeles Air Force Station. He then moved to the Office of Space Systems in the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force in Washington, D.C. When he returned to Los Angeles Air Force Station in 1980, he became the director of operations support and integration within Space Systems Division. Two years later he became assistant deputy commander for space operations, and after the Los Angeles space operations were combined with the space launch and control organization, he was made assistant deputy commander for launch and control systems.
In December of 1984 General Lindsay was assigned commander of the Eastern Space and Missile Center at Patrick Air Force Base, Florida. Two years later he became the deputy commander of launch and control systems at Space Systems Division headquarters, and as such was responsible for the acquisition of all Air Force launch vehicles, and management of the Air Force elements of the space shuttle program and the Air Force Satellite Control Network.
On October 1, 1988, he was promoted to major general, and retired on January 1, 1993. Over the course of his career he has earned the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster. He also wears the Master Space and Master Missile badges.
